In crystallography, a crystal structure is a unique 3D arrangement of atoms or molecules in a crystal. This arrangement is mainly dictated by symmetry. In this respect, symmetry phenomena are very intriguing for crystallographers. Escher was fascinated by symmetry, crystallographers (including me) are often fascinated by Escher's creations.
An exercise in typographical design is an ambigram (palindrome) that can adopt several types of symmetry. Nice examples are shown in Dan Brown's book Angels and Demons.
Some of Escher's drawings (Escher-website) fulfil 2D symmetry as regular division of the plane. Other mathematical prints even suggest 3D symmetry (impossible structures).

An Markus (Dutch)
Salvador Dali
His surrealistic artwork is unique. Visits to Figueres and Cadaques in Catalonia (Spain) are recommended to get inspired by his work.

Selfportret Temptation of Saint Anthony
GalatheaCarel Willink (Dutch)
His work is defined as imaginary realism. In his paintings he combined technical perfection, photorealism and an extremely sense for details with a scary, mysterious and unrealistic atmosphere.
